The Mandrill is one of the many wondrous creatures that the Congo Rainforest cares for. The Congo Rainforest is actually very similar to the Amazon rainforest. Both are rainforests and will harbor more or less the same inhabitants. They are both very close to the equator which will provide them both similar temperatures and precipitation. These rainforests have so much in common. But if they have so much in common, Why can't the Mandrill live in the Amazon? 1) Larger Animals The Mandrill is an omnivore, meaning it feeds on both plants and animals. Most of its food is found in or close to the ground. The mandrill is a medium sized creature so it has very few predators. The amazon is the largest rainforest in the world. It has way more species than the Congo rainforest does. If the Mandrill were to live in the Amazon it would not survive long. IN the Congo rainforest the Mandrill has very few predators because of its height. But in the Amazon there are much more larger species so the Mandrill would no longer be a top predator but a frequently hunted prey. prey. 2) Reproduction Reproduction is a big factor that would stop the Mandrill from living in the Amazon. The Mandrill reproduces every 6 to 7 months. The amount of larger animals would feed on the newly born Mandrill causing the population to decrease. 3) Climate Another factor that would cause the Mandrill to not live long in the Amazon would be the climate. The average temperature at night in the Congo rainforest is app. 15 degrees Celsius. The Mandrill is used to cool nights. In the Amazon the average nights range from 2 - 5 degrees Celsius. The Mandrill would suffer when night fall.
